World Refugee Day
Every year on June 20, the World Refugee Day is celebrated around the world.
United Nation international days “are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity”.
Several events take place in order to draw the public’s attention to the millions of refugees and Internally displaced women, men and children worldwide, forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict, violence and persecution.
This year, 2019, the theme for the World Refugee Day is “#StepWithRefugees — Take A Step on World Refugee Day”
The UNHCR is encouraging people around the world to count the steps they walk, run and cycle and register on a website, in order to cover the distance that refugees are forced to walk every year in order to reach safety.
The campaign aims to honor the efforts families make to survive, the UNHCR says.
